Omidyar Network India, an impact investment firm, has joined hands with the leaders of 11 Indian social-impact start-ups in its newly released video series ‘The Bold Ones - Innovating For The Next Half Billion’, which sees the leaders of prominent startups like Doubtnut, Bijak, CredR, and others, open up about what motivated them to drive change across various sectors like Education, Financial Inclusion, Emerging Technology, Governance and Citizen Engagement and Property Rights.
The candid exchanges with each of the founders offer intimate insights into the problems faced by the Indian landscape in these sectors, what each of them are doing to alleviate these problems and the social impact they aim to drive through their tech-led ventures. These insights come at a highly opportune time when India stands at the cusp of 500 million-plus Indians, or the ‘Next Half Billion’, coming online for the first time via their smartphones come 2022. The series brings together producer, entrepreneur and 4-time Emmy Award winner Francis Lyons, Former Global Head of Innovation at CNN, Ben Marks, emerging director, Mriidu Khosla as well as Gruff Animation, a studio that has worked with American director, Tim Burton.
Commenting on its release, Director and 4-time Emmy Award winner, Francis Lyons emphasized that what makes his subjects stand out is their commitment to finding sustainable solutions to ordinary problems like access to information and capital to inadequate education and unreliable public transportation that most of us face. “Highlighting the varied journeys, motivations, and even personal vulnerabilities these real-life heroes have endured chasing ‘unique’ solutions to common but critical problems, we hope more people will recognize they too can create change.", he said.
Urging for a need for more entrepreneurs to come together to create industry-wide impact, founders of Bijak, a start-up working to digitise agricultural trading and improve farmer lives, said, “...we need to develop entrepreneurial skills in the country. This is high time that youngsters become job creators instead of job seekers. India deserves this now.”
